Schoenoplectus validus, commonly known as Lake Club rush is a tall rhizomes sedge with upright green blue foliage It grows naturally n fresh water dams, swamps, lakes, creeks and on the edge of brackish water in coastal rivers and lagoons
Grows in full sun to part shade, preferring moist, boggy soil A great choice for wetland revegetation projects and can be planted in and around ponds
It is also an important food source for a variety of animals, including waterfowl and other wetland birds
Bush food:
- Stem bases: Can be chewed or pounded The tender base of the stem is eaten raw in salads
- Pollen: The pollen is used in soups or mixed with flour and used in making bread
- Roots: Crisp and pleasant to eat
Germination: Sprinkle seeds on top of damp soil, 1mm deep, and cover very lightly with soil Use a pot with a saucer of water underneath to maintain soil dampness Once germinated keep it in a shady spot with adequate water
