Subtropical large native shrub or evergreen tree with deliciously scented starry white flowers with a fragrance like gardenia

Atractocarpus fitzalanii grows as a woody shrub or small tree some 3 C10 m 9 8 C32 8 ft in height The trunk is covered by smooth grey bark

The new growth is a bright lime green in colour The small 2 2 5 cm or 1 inch white fragrant flowers appear from September to November The round or oval shaped fruit is 3 C4 cm in diameter and ripens in April to June

Its bushy lush foliage and bright new growth, fragrant flowers and edible and tasty fruit give it horticultural potential in gardens in subtropical climates

It is suited to a shady position with good drainage in gardens, or moderately to brightly lit indoor spaces

Pruning:
Generally not needed except to shape as desired

Very ornamental, hardy, has wonderful fragrance and is relatively easy to grow

fruit ripens slowly over Winter, turning yellow when ready for harvest

Fruit Uses:
Similar to a mangosteen in size, shape and flavour, they may be enjoyed raw on their own or used in salads, tarts, cakes and other desserts
