Some Arduino boards save expense by leaving off the USB to Serial converter, providing a simple serial interface instead using a standard 6 way header For example, our and Arduino compatible boards both use this header You can then use an FTDI USB to Serial cable with multiple boards, using it to load the sketch and then disconnecting it

The FTDI USB to Serial cable comes in both 3 3V and 5V versions to suit different boards, and you need to match the board voltage to the cable voltage
